This week we started geometry lessons. We learned about two-, and three-dimensional shapes (triangle, square, rectangle, hexagon, trapezoid, rhombus, cone, cylinder, cube, rectangular prism and sphere) and their attributes. For our handwork lesson, we decided to make origami window stars reviewing what we had learned. We discovered that two rectangles can make a square, two triangles can make a square, and creases can make a variety of shapes! Our origami expert, Joseph shared his origami bunny. We discovered that the bunny's face is a hexagon and ears are trapezoids. On Thursday we planted iris bulbs in our class garden. We are looking forward to seeing beautiful flowers in the late spring.

Can you believe that Finn and Raina share the same birthday (January 23)? We had their double birthday celebration Friday morning. We enjoyed the fruit salad their moms brought. Thank you! When we returned from the four-day weekend on Tuesday, we read a couple of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s books and discussed his contribution during our main lesson period. We continued to learn about fairy tales for the rest of the week. For math, we solved word problems with three attends in addition to the review of fact families. We resumed our bread baking this week. It was the first bread baking of the year 2015 and the bread turned out so delicious!! Friday afternoon we tried something different for painting. We did wet-on-wet watercolor salt painting. After painting, we sprinkled some salt and enjoyed beautiful snowflake-like patterns it created. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Welcome back to school! I enjoyed watching the children sharing their fun-filled holiday stories this week. The transition after the holiday break is difficult; however, the children went back to work smoothly. I am so proud them! The children completed their how-to books, which they started last month. We also started new units of study. For the next few weeks, we have reading, writing, grammar, speaking and listening activities through a variety of fairy tales. In math we started fact families (e.g. 5+6=11, 6+5+11, 11-5=6, 11-6=5). We made fact family houses and learned that three family members can live there. We also found out that we can make four number sentences (two additions and two subtractions) using the three numbers. The letters of the week were Aa and Ee. Have you noticed that the children's handwriting skills have improved significantly? That's because the children have been working diligently during handwriting lessons and this week was no exception.
