The second quarter has been going very well. The children started learning common and proper nouns this week. We enjoyed handwriting (letters J and L) as well as letter story pictures. For math, we continued to practice place value and writing number sentences. We also had fun with bread baking, gardening, surf lesson, yoga and other specials.

The week started with a huge surprise! I was speechless when I saw the beautiful fall decoration at our cottage entrance!! Ms. Sanders told us (SCCS teachers) that the parents had worked hard over the weekend to express their appreciation. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Even though we had a short week, the children worked hard to add finishing touches for the student showcase. I hope you enjoyed our performance and the children's work. Since we did not have school on Friday due to teacher work day, we had a surfing lesson on Thursday. Before the lesson the children traced their friends' shadows and made predictions if the shadows would move, grow taller, bigger get shorter, etc. Elle found out that her shadow had moved while surfing. She was not able to have her entire shadow fit in the outline anymore. Why is that? We will continue this science lesson on the beach next Friday. Have a wonderful day! :)
How exciting! We had two new students this week! We welcomed Jayden and Daisy to our class. They made new friends quickly and enjoyed activities they had never experienced at their previous schools, such as bread baking and surfing. Now we have SEVEN boys whose names start with J! Friday, October 17 was Joshua's birthday. We celebrated his birthday with special treats Joshua's mom brought and made birthday cards during Artistic Activity period. This week the children practiced story sequencing through Kevin Henkes' books and their life events. We revisited what we have learned for the past nine weeks and carefully entered their best work in their main lesson books. The children have been working diligently to prepare for the student showcase. Enjoy this week's photos. :) The highlight of the week was surfing! The first graders had their first surfing lesson on Friday. We had a blast!! Much thank to the parents and family members who joined us. Mrs. Hopkins and I appreciate your help. We can't wait for our next lesson! The beach was not only place the children had a blast. They enjoyed learning on campus too. We continued our author study about Kevin Henkes. The children made predictions while reading the story. They also made connections to the stories. During our morning circle, we practiced identifying/making telling, asking and exclamatory sentences.
For math, we made number dot plates (thank you for providing supplies, Mrs. McMahon!). The children made interesting math stories using the plates and wrote number sentences. Although we had a fun-filled week and enjoyed surfing, we were sad on Friday. It was Graham's last day at Seaside. We made cards for him during our artistic activity period. We will miss you, Graham. Remember that you will always have friends at Seaside. This week we continued our author study about Kevin Henkes. We learned strategies to decode unfamiliar words through Henkes' books. We also started working on an attribute chart of his books. During artistic activity period, the children drew pictures of letter P and S pictures (prince and starry sky). The children made math stories, learned adding/subtracting numbers using a number line, rulers and manipulatives (leaves and nuts). Last week I brought a monarch butterfly caterpillar I had rescued in my butterfly garden to the classroom. It became a chrysalis next day and a beautiful butterfly on Thursday! During the gardening period, the first graders gathered at the circle, sang "Bonnie the Beautiful Butterfly," and released it. This video is unlisted on Youtube. |
