Our math coach, Mr. Pinchot visits our class 2-3 mornings a week and teaches fun math lessons. We have been practicing measuring and comparing lengths using centimeters and meters. We learned that it is important to use an appropriate tool to measure objects accurately and efficiently. As you see in the slideshow, it is more efficient to use a meter stick to measure the rug than using a centimeter ruler. On Friday Lili brought a snake skin, which her dad found at work, and shared with us! We measured it using appropriate tools. It was 1 meter and 6 centimeters! The children immediately converted the length into centimeters (106 cm)! Again Mrs. Belyea took beautiful pictures of our surfing lesson and shared with us. Thank you, Mrs. Belyea!

We had our first sewing lesson Wednesday morning. Our handwork teacher, Ms. Kessler taught the children how to sew a felt shape to a pencil case. They did an AMAZING job!! We made origami pandas for the book of the month activity and geometry lesson. The children also enjoyed form drawing lessons. We had our first guided chalk drawing lesson on Wednesday. I chose a scene from a book of the month, "Zen Shorts." I found out that a Japanese title of this book is, "A Panda Called Quiet Water" so I included two Chinese characters 静水 that represent "quiet" and "water." (FYI, the Japanese writing system consists of two types of Japanese characters and Chinese characters.) The children not only drew pictures beautifully but also wrote the Chinese characters splendidly! Zen (禅) is a Japanese word that means meditation so we meditated afterwards. Friday's surfing lesson was full of excitement. The children enjoyed surfing watching a school of dolphins! We also spotted a shark and had to evacuate to the shore for a while! Mrs. Tomlinson brought a watermelon for the children. What a cool and refreshing treat to have! Thank you, Mrs. Tomlinson! I would also like to thank Mrs. Belyea for taking beautiful pictures and sharing them again. This week we had our first birthday celebration of the school year. Friday (September 4) was Ollie's birthday. Happy Birthday, Ollie! The second week went well. The new students enjoyed activities they had never experienced before such as wet-on-wet watercolor painting and surfing for PE. We also had collaborative activities, in which the children made predictions about the book of the month, "Zen Shorts" and created math stories. Can you believe that Finn and Myo lost their loose teeth at the same time (right after lunch time) on Monday? |
